Giant Art: giant prints, made with Guisborough’s primary school children and collated by the giant project as the giant’s cosy patchwork quilt (banner)

It’s all developed from the way I used my time when I was little: I was always drawing, making things, asking questions, listening and noticing details. I gravitated towards other artists, read a lot of books and went to as many exhibitions as I could. I began small scale, making cards and little pictures, selling them when I was out and about and one thing seemed to lead to another. My life has flowed in a peculiar and unexpected way.

Creative growth naturally emerged from Side Burner Pyrography. Initially a hobby for Craig,

Combined we draw from over 50 years experience in training and coaching via people management roles across various sectors, including warehousing, retail management, and retail finance.

Side Burner gained momentum through sales to friends and family, eventually expanding to local craft fairs.

As part of our mission, we offer pyrography workshops for groups of up to 15 people, providing experiences where people can explore their creativity to support well-being, combat loneliness, and build social ties.

Our commitment extends to assisting other crafters in developing their offerings and reaching a broader audience through our crafters hosting platform.

We prioritise affordability, quality, and fair terms to help crafters engage in creative activities and craft tutors thrive in their businesses.

Kat is a Saltburn-by-the-Sea based designer maker, who has always lived and worked in the North.  After working in textile printing for several years, started moving to a new creative career path and started THAT design studio.  Being a fan of the North, its local culture and nature is reflected in Kat’s artwork.  Alongside this, she is also influenced by retro design and a love of colourful things.

Giant Art: “The Wandering Giant”

The story: Follow the giant as he takes a walk, exploring the local area. Starting at Redcar, he gets lots of lemon tops from the seafront (because as a giant, one ice cream is pretty small!). Then he takes off his shoes and walks barefoot along the beach to Marske. He passes Cliff House and a couple of fishing boats as he’s spotted from the sand dunes. Arriving in Saltburn, he spots the cliff lift and peers inside. Then crossing over fields, heading away from the coast, the giant makes his way to Guisborough and takes a little break at Gisborough Priory. His journey ends at Roseberry Topping, where you can see he’s resting, sitting on the top of the hill swinging his legs and admiring the view.

The process: Each design was carefully considered, keeping the scale of the giant the same throughout the five designs and working on each place being recognisable to the care home residents, staff and their families. The giant was printed in the same style on each design, but the rest of the design was left uncoloured, ready to work on with each of the homes. Using paint, pencil crayons and tissue paper, I worked with the residents and staff to add the colour and texture. The materials were used in different ways, working with the residents, guiding them through the process, asking for their input on colours for example. The result was that each home created a colourful unique collage.

It has been a lovely process, seeing the residents connect with the pieces through recognising the locations as well as a sense of achievement when they saw their contributions added to make the final finished pieces. There was a real sense of teamwork, appreciating the their fellow residents’ input alongside their own.

Giant Art: Trees, Leaves and Giants (community art banner)

artist statement I am a textile artist narrating hidden stories and memories, protecting and honouring them through stitch. The relationships within the stories are explored, including those with the world around us. I create conceptual research-based work, looking for the quirky often overlooked facts.  Materials are central to my work – it is essential that they further the narrative and expand the emotion behind the piece.  This often results in non-traditional textile materials being chosen. I often work with preloved or found items and take their history apart to reveal their story. During this process I reflect on the previous owners and their use of the item; these musings often affect the final outcome.

on the Giant project – It was a pleasure to work alongside the community of Guisborough to co-create the giant banner. Everyone worked so hard to share ideas, create the different elements and to help complete the banner; it became so much more than the artwork allowing people to connect with others and bring their ideas to life.

artist statement I have a love of nature and animals, which is clearly seen in my work.  The nature journal pages I create are made with natural inks, charcoals and other media that I forage locally in North Yorkshire. I am preparing a natural environment in my garden to create more inks and a natural palette to work with. I love to draw the plants as they grow and reseed. All my images are created from spending time with natural materials, forest walks, mornings sitting in places like hedges, graveyards and my garden. I have 3 cats and love animals so I support a  number of animal charities. I hope to help animals by working with animal charities to sell products that help them and also create a good feeling with my products. They are perfect for the nature lover or animal lover in your life. You will definitely get the good feel vibe by having these products in your surroundings.

Everyday I create an instagram post called “A day in the life of an artist”to show the daily life hurdles and obstacles I overcome to make art; it is often never the tranquil day of painting people imagine. I work with the best quality materials to create colourful and varied artworks, I also create huge murals, work with community groups and always seem to have a busy life.  My work as an Artists has brought the accolade of some very prestigious Awards and I am very proud of this accomplishment after a long career teaching Art and Design. I am very proud of my achievements in such a short time. My parents have always been very supportive of my career, My Dad persuaded me to take the plunge and have my imagery on fabric. Presiman Designs offered the chance and such high quality organic fabrics and products to see this happen! The quality and results are so outstanding. I have had so much feedback on how great they look.

You can see more of me on instagram and Facebook; I have helped lots of young artists explore art materials and techniques in drawing classes, workshops and also voluntary work. I feel at ease working with people, sharing tips and helping people feel good by exploring their creative side.
